What is Overtraining?
Overtraining is a common problem with many people, especially those who are highly motivated to reach a goal but may not necessarily know the right way to reach it. These are the people you see in the gym every single day for multiple hours, usually more than once a day. Overtraining can be dangerous and cause plateaus, limiting progress. Recovery time is just as important as the workout itself. To continue to progress towards your goal, you need proper recovery time, plenty of sleep, and the right nutrients and vitamins. Training too often or too intensely will limit the body’s capacity to heal itself. So how do you know if you’re overtraining? Here are some signs to look for:
* You aren’t progressing towards your goal; you’ve hit a plateau
* A drop in performance
* Feeling of fatigue
* Constant muscle soreness
* Inability to concentrate
* Sleeping too much or too little
* Abnormally high resting heart rate
Do these symptoms sound familiar? If you think you may be overtraining, there is an easy fix. Take at least a week off from your normal workouts. Continue to stay active but take it easy. Be sure to eat a variety of fruits, veggies, lean protein, and whole grains. Get lots of quality sleep and rest. Stretch everyday.
